Bears release veteran safety Chris Harris

The Chicago Bears have split with veteran strong safety Chris Harris.

Multiple sources told the Tribune that Harris was released Thursday morning. He started in the Bears 24-18 victory over Tampa Bay in London with the highest Wright a hip injury.

Harris told the Tribune he did not ask to be released, and later told "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on WMVP-AM 1000 that he did not know why they let him go. Harris said he was notified of his release by coach Lovie Smith said the team wanted to go younger at the safety position.

Harris said in the radio interview that was healthy and hoped to connect with another NFL team. Harris also said he believed his release was related to your Twitter activity, which included a tweet that asked if everyone associated with the Bears was being responsible for the control of the team.

Harris was benched after a poor performance in Monday night loss to the Lions and was inactive for the following game against the Vikings. He then asked permission to seek a trade, and the Bears agreed to the request. However, Harris decided to end the season with the Bears after speaking with management.

Apparently, the Bears could sign Tom Nelson, a graduate of Hersey who played at Illinois, to replace Harris. Nelson was one of six players and two security to get an overhaul in the Halas Hall on Wednesday. According to one source, we obtained better results than the former Denver Broncos' second-round pick Darcel McBath, who did not work well.

Nelson made the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2009 when it came time to play in the HBO series "Hard Knocks". The 5-11, 200 pounds Nelson had 25 tackles and an interception this season to reach three starts. Nelson, 24, was cut loose by the Bengals in August.

Harris started 39 of 44 career games played with the Bears, recording 10 interceptions and three fumble recoveries. He had two seasons in Chicago after being traded to Carolina in 2008 for a proposed fifth-round pick after being traded back to the Bears in 2010.

Harris had a base salary of $ 1.095 million this year with a bonus of $ 500,000.

The Bears also confirmed they have released practice squad defensive end Jake LAPT.
