Bernard Madoff and Ruth attempt suicide, says Ruth in his first interview

(CBS News) In the first interview Ruth Madoff has given about her husband's crimes, she says she and Bernard Morley Safer were so distressed by the burden of the crimes he tried to commit suicide together. Security talks to Madoff's son Andrew, a story that will provide the first account in the immediate family of the man who stole billions of dollars. The report will air on "60 Minutes" Sunday, October 30 at 7 pm ET / PT.
"I do not know whose idea it was, but decided to kill us because it was so horrible what was happening," says Ruth Madoff insurance. "We've had terrible phone calls. Letters of hatred beyond anything and said," ... I can not more. '"

So Ruth and Bernard Madoff took a lot of pills, some of them and possibly some Klonopin Ambien recalls Ruth. Do not drink alcohol with them for fear of vomiting. "I took what I had, took over," says Ruth. It was Christmas Eve, he says, "which added to the general depression." But the pills did not work. "We have taken the pills and woke up the next day .... It is very impulsive and I'm glad you woke up" he says.

A little forethought went into the decision, however, because Ruth sent a package to his son Andrew, the violation of a court order before making a suicide pact. The package sentimental items, including jewelry. Three years later, Andrew asked his mother why she had sent him the jewelry. "And she said that she and my father had planned to take his life ... to put the package together and sent it ahead," he tells Safer.
